October 29, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor International (South Portland, ME) announced it has appointed Laurenz Schmidt as senior vice president of global operations. Schmidt will be responsible for the ongoing success of Fairchild's manufacturing expertise and will report directly to the president, CEO, and chairman of the board, Kirk Pond.

Schmidt has 25 years experience in the semiconductor industry. He has held increasingly responsible positions throughout Fairchild's manufacturing organization since 1983. Schmidt will replace Jerry Baker who is retiring after 29 years in the industry. Baker was Fairchild's first executive vice president and general manager of the discrete power and signal technologies group and most recently was the executive vice president of global operations.

"The global operations team is a strong organization, focused on both the front and back end manufacturing of Fairchild's new and existing products from cost-effective, state-of-the-art facilities worldwide,” said Pond. "Laurenz has had a long and varied career and held many management positions in global operations. His extensive experience in all phases of manufacturing will ensure a seamless transition to this vitally important role."
