DRS and Lithiumstart Partner to Pursue High-Power Energy Storage

December 03, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

DRS Technologies, a Finmeccanica Company, has expanded its role in the military and commercial energy storage business. DRS Power and Control Technologies has signed a memorandum of agreement with Lithiumstart LLC, a supplier of scalable, lithium ion and super capacitor-based energy storage systems (ESS), to integrate technologies into high-power military and commercial energy storage applications. DRS Power Electronic Modules (PEM), which provide reliable, higher-power density power conversion capability, will be combined with Lithiumstart's ESS technology to create a powerful and scalable Energy Storage Module.

These systems can be used in naval surface combatant ships to provide stable backup power, fuel efficient operations and reduced total ownership costs. Additional markets include a wide range of commercial workboat applications and other military systems. DRS PEM technology is currently used on several U.S. Navy platforms and programs. Lithiumstart's ESS technology leverages both internal and U.S. Department of Defense investment in high-power density storage including U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Army applications.

"The ability to adapt tune and test the COTS building blocks of our modular design to multiple DOD and commercial applications helps us accelerate time to market. Similarly, leveraging DRS's proven power management and integration capabilities allows rapid deployment on multiple platforms in the near term" said Lithiumstart Chief Operating Officer, Rich Schroeder.

"Lithiumstart's game changing technology and proven quality manufacturing processes combined with the DRS PEM technology strategically positions our team for stable and reliable power applications both in the U.S. Navy and commercial maritime market places" said Vince Stammetti, Vice President and General Manager at DRS's Power and Control Technologies.
