April 17, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

California Micro Devices (CMD) announced that it has established a design center in Phoenix, Arizona. The mission of the Phoenix Design Center is to develop advanced protection products for markets not currently served by CMD, including telecom infrastructure.

The new design center will be led by Dr. Sudhama Shastri, who recently joined CMD. Before joining CMD, Dr. Shastri held engineering management positions at ON Semiconductor as well as engineering management and technical positions at Motorola.

In a related move, CMD also announced the promotion of Dr. Albert Gu to head its protection development activities in Milpitas aimed at high volume markets including mobile handsets and digital televisions. Prior to joining CMD in 2007, Dr. Gu held technical management positions at TriQuint and Global Communication Technology as well as technical positions at Motorola and Sandia Labs. Both Dr. Gu and Dr. Shastri report to Juergen Lutz, CMD engineering vice president.

Lutz noted that the new Phoenix Design Center represents a major new thrust for the company’s protection R&D capabilities and enables it to tap into a large pool of talented and experienced engineers. "I’m delighted that Dr. Shastri has agreed to lead our Phoenix Design Center and to announce the well deserved promotion of Dr. Gu. Both gentlemen bring a wealth of experience and demonstrated leadership capability to their new roles."
