September 20, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Ballard Power Systems Inc. (Vancouver, BC) announced that it signed a $22.0 million, three-year deal with Ford Motor Co. (Dearborn, MI) to supply Ford with Mark 900 Series fuel cell modules and engineering support.

"We intend to launch our first commercial fuel cell vehicle in 2004 and this agreement with Ballard will enable us to achieve that goal," said John Wallace, executive director of Think brand for Ford, in a statement.

Firoz Rasul, Ballard Chairman and CEO, said it was the largest order for Ballard fuel cells to date. Ballard also is working with DaimlerChrysler AG in its efforts to produce a fuel cell vehicle and has provided fuel cells to Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Nissan Motors Corp., and Volkswagen AG, among others.
