Artesyn, Astec Power, TI Join in New POLA

June 12, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn North America, a subsidiary of Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), and Astec America, a subsidiary of Emerson's Astec Power (Carlsbad, CA), each reached a second-source licensing agreement with Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) to standardize leading technology for high-performance power converters, ensuring interoperability and customer design flexibility.

With these agreements, Artesyn, Astec Power and TI form a Point-of-Load Alliance (POLA), which offers customers pin-compatible footprints that provide the same functionality and form factors. All three companies will manufacture products with the same electrical designs that ensure interoperability and true second sourcing. The agreements promote pin-compatible, advanced non-isolated, point-of-load, plug-in power modules for wireless infrastructure, optical switching, networking, storage and industrial systems that use digital signal processors, field-programmable gate arrays, application-specific integrated circuits and microprocessors.

The first generation of these products, the PTHxx Series with Auto-Track™ sequencing, was recently introduced by TI. Artesyn and Astec Power plan to introduce their own versions of this product in the third quarter of 2003.
