AMSC Reports Sale of D-VAR Transmission System

March 29, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC, Westborough, MA) and GE Energy, a business of the General Electric Co., announced the sale of a Dynamic Volt-Ampere-Reactive (D-VAR) reactive power compensation system to the Long Island Power Authority. The D-VAR system will be installed in the East Hampton electrical substation to increase transmission grid reliability, and to reduce the costs and environmental impacts associated with operating the grid during times of peak demand for electricity.

The D-VAR systems provide a powerful and cost-effective way to increase the reliability of power transmission grids by instantly injecting reactive power (VARs) into the grid at precise locations where voltage problems occur. The D-VAR systems are based on AMSC's proprietary power electronic PowerModule™ converters.
