XP Power Intros ECM100 AC-DC Switcher

October 30, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

XP Power plc (Sunnyvale, CA), a provider of ac-dc power supplies and dc-dc converter power solutions, introduced the new ECM100 single-output ac-dc switching power supply, which is suitable for industrial, medical, and communications OEM applications. The ECM100 has a footprint of 4.5 in x 2.5 in and a height of 1.2 in, and the power density is 7.4 W/in³. Outputs are from +3.3 Vdc to +48 Vdc, and the power supplies have safety approvals for any voltage within this range, including custom-specified outputs. Input voltage is from 85 Vac to 264 Vac (170 Vdc to 270 Vdc) and efficiency is up to 87 percent.

The compact size of the ECM100 has been achieved by minimizing component count and using just two heatsinks. In addition, the design of the flyback converter combines continuous and discontinuous modes of operation to enable a much smaller transformer to be used. The ECM100 has low earth leakage current of less than 100 µA at 115 Vac and less than 200 µA at 230 Vac. Inrush current is 40 A maximum at 230 Vac, with the input protected by 3.15 A fuses in both line and neutral. Input to output isolation is 4,000 Vac. Outputs are adjustable by ±5 percent on 3.3 V and 5 V models, and by ±10 percent on those with higher output voltages. Line and load regulation are ±0.5 percent and ±1 percent, respectively and there is no minimum load requirement. The operating temperature range is from 0 °C to +80 °C, and the power supplies have over-temperature, over-voltage, and overload protection built in.

Additionally, the ECM100 features Class I and Class II approvals, EN61000-3-2,-3 compliance, and Level B performance for conducted emissions. The ECM100 is available now priced at $52 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
