VPT Introduces DV200 COTS DC/DC Converter

October 09, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

VPT Inc. (Blacksburg, VA) introduced a new dc/dc converter, the DV200, which provides up to 200W of output power in a standard half-brick size. Ideal for high-reliability applications such as ruggedized laptop computers or ground-based military vehicles, the DV200 offers an affordable, immediate power-conversion solution for military and aerospace programs.

"We’ve merged our innovative, high-density hybrid technology with the affordability of a potted module to provide a cost-effective solution for high-reliability applications," explained Mike Bosmann, vice president of sales and marketing for VPT. "And with quantities available immediately from stock, customers can power their systems with a military-grade solution today instead of months from now, and speed their programs to market."

The new DV200 is optimized for use in high-end military and aerospace applications, such as ruggedized laptop computers, ground-based weapons systems, non-airborne vehicles, and other demanding applications. The DV200 incorporates VPT’s patented magnetic-feedback technology, which eliminates the use of optocouplers in the unit and boosts product performance in slow startup situations. Additionally, the DV200 offers what is claimed to be the highest power density available today for military applications in the half-brick size, due to direct bond copper and additional specialized thermal design techniques.

“This is a good example of an innovative company supplying necessary components to assist military and aerospace contractors in fulfilling cost targets through the COTS initiative," said Jeff Shepard, president of the Darnell Group, a leading power industry analyst firm. "The demand remains high for advanced hybrid products for airborne applications, but COTS modules such as VPT’s DV200 can also fulfill cost and performance requirements for non-airborne applications, such as Navy vessels or ground weapons systems."

Other features include an extremely wide input-voltage range of 16V to 50V; single outputs of 3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V; power output from 100W to 200W, depending on output voltage; ability to parallel up to five units to boost output power up to 1,000W; ability to cycle through the full specified military temperature range of –55 to 100 degrees C; and an under-voltage lockout feature to prevent system failure.

The DV200 meets MIL-STD-461C and MIL-STD-461D EMC requirements when used in conjunction with VPT’s DVME28 EMI filter.

The DV200 is now available from stock at $311 per unit in quantities of 100.
