Vishay Announces New FunctionPAK DC/DC Converters

October 29, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) announced its new FunctionPAK synchronous dc/dc converters, which are offered in a single BGA/LGA package measuring just 14.7mm x 12.2mm x 1.8mm. The converters also offer a power density of 80W per cubic inch, reduce board space requirements and simplify product development processes. The FunctionPAK converters are intended for cell phones, notebook computers, digital cameras and other portable electronic systems.

The FunctionPAK devices integrate up to 20 separate components, including a controller IC, primary and secondary power MOSFETs, and several passive devices. They deliver up to 95 percent efficiency. No external components are required for a complete solution. For maximum reliability, the 20-port BGA/LGA FunctionPAK is specified for the industrial temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C.

The first two FunctionPAK devices are synchronous buck (FX5545G001) and synchronous boost (FX5545G002) converters that combine a 2MHz switching controller with fully integrated passive components. The FX5545G001 buck converter converts 2.7V to 6V inputs to a 1.5V to 3.6V output voltage, with a maximum output current of 600mA. The FX5545G002 boost converter converts 2.5V to 6V input voltages to a 3.3V to 6V output voltage with a maximum output current of 500mA.

Both draw just 1mA in shutdown mode and offer programmable PWM and pulse-skipping mode controls to maximize power-conversion efficiency during standby and idle modes, prolonging overall battery life and increasing talk time in cell phones. The FunctionPAK devices are also designed with a 100-percent duty cycle control for PSM operation.
