Toshiba Battery and Nihon Protector Develop New UPS
Toshiba Battery Co. Ltd. (Japan) has developed a compact UPS that can fit inside a PC. The Smart Nonstop Power Supply System was developed in cooperation with computer power-supply maker Nihon Protector Co. (Japan).
The Smart Nonstop Power Supply System utilizes small, thin nickel-hydrogen batteries and a single voltage converter in place of the conventional lead storage battery and three voltage converters. The new UPS takes up 240 cubic centimeters of space and weighs 1kg.
Toshiba Battery plans to market the device in December 2001, priced just under $400. The company intends to target companies, the small-office market and individual consumers, aiming for sales of 100,000 units in the first year and 200,000 units per year after that.
