TI Introduces Miniature, 1-W dc–dc Converters with 3-kV Isolation

June 28, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced a 1-W, unregulated dc–dc converter in a miniature package that features 3-kV isolation. The new DCH01 family of plug-in power modules operates from a 5V input and provides single voltages of 5V, 12V, and 15V and complementary dual-output voltages of ±5V, ±12V and ±15V. The tiny modules are well-suited for industrial applications such as data acquisition, motor control, programmable logic control, test and measurement, medical instrumentation and professional audio.

TI's DCH01 series provides up to 85% efficiency and easily meets UL60950 specifications with 3 kVrms isolation and EN55022 Class B EMC performance. Supporting an operating temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C, the modules easily power TI's new ISO721 and ISO721M high-speed digital isolators, which were introduced in January. In addition, the DCH01 provides highly effective point-of-load power conversion and ground loop elimination for noise-sensitive applications.

The DCH01 uses reliable PC-board construction, and is housed in an industry standard 20 mm x 8 mm x 10 mm SIP-7 package that is Pb-free/RoHS compliant. DCH01's open-frame design enhances reliability by eliminating potting commonly found in competitive products.

The DCH01 series is immediately available, and currently shipping in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors. The modules are priced at $4.25 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
