Taiyo Yuden Debuts Surface-Mountable Micro DC/DC Converter
Taiyo Yuden USA Inc. (Schaumburg, IL) has introduced a surface-mountable micro dc/dc converter, which functions together with the portable or other hand-held device’s battery to provide a distributed power source. The micro dc/dc’s power output per unit volume is 20W/cc. Taiyo Yuden reports that the converter achieves up to 85 percent efficiency.
The micro dc/dc chip accepts input voltages between 3.0V to 5.5V, and provides an adjustable output from 0.8Vdc to 3.0Vdc at 350mA, with a typical output ripple of only 20mV. The device’s package typically measures 5.7mm x 4.2mm x 2.35mm, maximum. The company envisions next-generation micro dc/dc converters with a 500 percent increase in the power-to-size ratio being introduced by the third quarter of 2002.
The micro dc/dc converter is currently available in production quantities in the buck converter only. Engineering samples of four other device configurations (boost 1, boost 2, buck-boost and inverting) are available now, and will be in full production in 2002. Pricing starts at $3 each in 1,000-piece quantities. Delivery is in eight weeks ARO.
