Stackpole Intros RNCS Series Precision Chip Resistors

May 04, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Stackpole Electronics Inc. (SEI, Raleigh, NC) introduced a new line of anti-corrosive precision chip resistors that eliminate moisture concerns associated with typical nickel chromium precision resistors. Typical applications and markets include instrumentation, medical equipment, computers, power supplies, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace and portable electronics.

The new RNCS Series is available in industry-standard 0402 to 2512 sizes and has a resistance range from 4.7 Ω to 1 MΩ, with tolerances down to ±0.01% and TCRs as low as 5 ppm/°C. The RNCS Series has an operating temperature range of -55 °C to +150 °C.

The RNCS Series features a proprietary thin-film manufacturing process, where a passivation layer is introduced between the nichrome resistive element and the epoxy overcoat to ensure stable performance and long life in harsh and wet environments. In MIL-STD-202 moisture testing, the RNCS Series demonstrated stability over time and showed no significant shift in resistance after the 1,000-hour life test at 85 °C and 85% humidity.

The RNCS Series is priced based on tolerance and TCR dependence, but $0.20 is typical in quantities of 1,000 pieces. Lead times for the RNCS Series is four to six weeks.
