Second Generation of COT Buck Converters

June 08, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS) today released AOZ226X, second-generation of high efficiency, easy-to-use synchronous EZBuck™ regulators featuring a proprietary Constant On-Time (COT) control architecture that enables smaller solutions and simplifies designs. The AOZ226X provides a solution for next generation computing chipsets that are pushing the limits of dc-dc converter size; such as those in the latest notebook PCs, ultrabooks, graphics cards, servers, data storage systems, and high-end smart TVs.

AOZ226X uses a proprietary COT pwm control with input feed-forward that results in ultra-fast transient response while maintaining relatively constant switching frequency over the entire input voltage range. The on-time is programmed externally. This new generation is designed for enhancing the performance of DDR and Platform Controller Hub (PCH) applications. It is capable of supplying up to 15A of continuous output current with an output voltage adjustable down to 0.6V (±1%).

“These new COT buck converters feature an ultra-low quiescent current (150μA), which can help extend battery life when the system switches to standby mode. The high density power integration of the QFN4x4 package is perfect for reducing BOM size,” said Kenny Hu, Power IC Product Marketing Manager at AOS.

Features include: Low RDS(on) Internal NFETs; Selectable PFM Light Load Operation; Ripple Reduction; Power Good Output; Integrated Bootstrap Diode; Short-Circuit Protection; and Thermal Shutdown.

All devices are delivered in the QFN4x4-22L package and are immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12-14 weeks. The unit price for 1,000 pieces for AOZ2260-XX, AOZ2261-XX, AOZ2262-XX, AOZ2263-XX, AOZ2264-XX are $1.96, $2.25, $2.70, $3.24, and $ 3.89, respectively.
