Schaefer Introduces Rugged Power Converter For Subsea Environments

April 14, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Schaefer, Inc. announced a new power converter which is well suited for subsea mineral exploration or other deep sea applications. According to the company, the use of industrial grade components yields a highly efficient, space-saving solution while increased mechanical strength and tropical protection facilitates reliable operation in extreme environments.

Based upon Schaefer’s C3700 power converter, the robust design provides up to 1100W of power with an adjustable, tightly regulated 24Vdc output. Schaefer can also engineer units to accept a high voltage input (up to 5000Vdc) or to supply higher output voltages and/or output power. No minimum load is required for stable operation. The converter is optimized thus that seawater can be used as the input return path.

The power converter operates with convection cooling over a wide temperature range of -20 to +75°C. All dissipated heat is efficiently conducted through a single flat aluminum surface that can be mounted to the subsea structure. Over temperature shutdown with alarms, featuring automatic recovery, is inherent in the design.

Additional features and comprehensive protection circuitry includes remote sensing, Power-OK, DC-OK, current limiting, short circuit protection, overvoltage protection and overload protection.
