Saft Expands Super-Phosphate Product Range with High Energy Cell for Defense Applications

April 11, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Saft introduced the VL 45E Fe high energy Super-Phosphate™, expanding its new range of high performance lithium iron phosphate cells. These large cells are designed for defense applications, such as U.S. Navy undersea operations.

"In response to customer demand, Saft designed and developed Super-Phosphate technology to provide high energy batteries for use in applications with long run times and low abuse tolerance," said Thomas Alcide, Saft Specialty Battery Group general manager. "Saft recently expanded the range with the VL 45E Fe cell, which has a specific energy of 160 Wh/kg, making it the world’s highest energy lithium iron phosphate cell."

According to Saft, compared with standard lithium iron phosphate cells, the Super-Phosphate technology features proven safety, longer cycle life, better calendar life and a wide operating temperature range, including superior lower temperature performance. Additionally, the cells have a high resistance to abuse and can safely accept a regenerative charge from float conditions.

Saft uses a licensed form of iron phosphate developed by scientists at the University of Texas and the cells are being manufactured in the United States.
