Pulse Intros Prism Series Power Transformers

New Products Aug 18, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Pulse Engineering Inc. (San Diego, CA) announced its new Prism Series of high-frequency planar transformers, the PA0442, PA0526, PA0550, PA0576 and PA0581, designed specifically for Linear Technology Corp.'s (Milpitas, CA) LT1950, LTC3722, LT1725 and LTC1922 integrated circuits. They can be used in forward, push-pull, half-bridge and full-bridge power supply topologies.

The Prism Series offers a wide-range of winding configurations, a power rating of up to 250W and a small footprint of 29.5mm x 25.4mm x 9.3mm to 10.4mm. The series provides a cost-effective solution with a 40% size reduction when compared to conventional wound magnetics. The transformers also have low ac losses and repeatable parasitics for resonant-based designs. Approved for use by major original equipment manufacturers and integrated circuit manufacturers, the new series is suitable for telecom, datacom and industrial-based applications.

The Prism Series is available in a high-efficiency, double-interleave design (PA0526 and PA0550) with lower dc resistance and lower leakage inductance. Also available are low-cost, single-interleave versions (PA0442 and PA0576). The series is designed with basic insulation and supports input voltages from 18Vdc to 75Vdc. Operating temperatures range from -40°C to +125°C. The dc resistance ranges from 0.56 milliohms to 4.5 milliohms depending upon interleaving configuration. The flat-top package allows the transformer series to be compatible with pick-and-place manufacturing processes.

The new Prism Series is available in trays, with prices starting at $3 per unit for quantities of 100,000. Lead-time is four to six weeks.
