Power Solutions from Cosel and P-Duke Hit the Market

March 23, 2024 by Jake Hertz

Both companies have released improved power solutions in recent months.

Two common components in electronics are the AC/DC power supply and the DC/DC front-end filter. Whereas AC/DC power supplies ensure devices receive clean, stable energy, front-end filters protect sensitive electronics from potentially harmful electrical disturbances.

Recently, two noteworthy releases, power supplies from Cosel and DC/DC  front-end filters from P-Duke, have hit the market.  Both devices mark improvements over their predecessors. This article reviews both products and their features.

Cosel’s AC/DC Power Supplies

Cosel recently introduced its PDA series of AC/DC power supplies. The series, which includes the 15W PDA15F, 30W PDA30F, and 50W PDA50F models, is designed to replace the retiring PBA series and offers enhanced reliability and performance. These power supplies employ a quasi-resonant topology and are constructed with a minimal number of components to maximize reliability and efficiency.

The PDA series stands out for its wide operating temperature range of -20 to +70°C, making it suitable for a broad spectrum of industrial environments. Each model in the series is 100% form, fit, and function compatible with its PBA predecessor, ensuring a seamless upgrade path for existing systems. The power supplies are certified under UL/EN62368-1 and comply with the latest safety standards.

The PDA series includes an input voltage ranging from 85 VAC to 264 VAC single phase, accommodating global industrial power requirements. The output voltages available are 5 V, 12 V, and 24 V and can be adjusted to the output voltage via a built-in potentiometer.

Additionally, efficiency is a key feature of the PDA series, with models achieving up to 87.5% efficiency at 230 VAC and full load. This is a significant improvement over the previous PBA series, with a more than five percentage point increase in efficiency. Higher efficiency translates into lower heat dissipation, enhancing the reliability and lifespan of the power supply and the system it powers.

Protection features include inrush current limiting, overcurrent protection with automatic recovery, and overvoltage protection, ensuring the power supply and connected equipment’s safe operation. Although the PDA series lacks built-in active power factor correction (PFC), it complies with IEC61000-3-2 (Class A) standards.

P-Duke’s MCF-028 Front-End Filters

P-Duke recently unveiled its MCF series, a line of highly integrated DC/DC front-end filters designed specifically for defense and railway applications.

The MCF series can deliver up to 250 W of output power while accommodating a wide input voltage range of 9-36 VDC. This flexibility makes the filters ideal for various applications, including 28 V military vehicles and aircraft, 24 V rolling stock, and industrial systems. One key feature is the filters’ active surge protection, which can handle up to 100 V/50ms and maintain the connected systems’ reliability and safety even under extreme voltage fluctuations.

Designed to comply with several military and industrial standards, including MIL-STD-1275E, MIL-STD-704F, RTCA DO-160G, and MIL-STD-461G, the MCF series guarantees compatibility and performance in the most demanding environments. Moreover, the MCF series is designed for durability and resilience, meeting MIL-STD-810F specifications for shock and vibration and operating within a temperature range of -40°C to 105°C, with an optional extension down to -55°C.

The MCF filters are also engineered to address electromagnetic interference (EMI) challenges. They feature an internal EMI filter with additional MLCCs to meet the MIL-STD-461G limits. This protects the filters against voltage spikes and minimizes electromagnetic disruptions, enhancing the system’s overall performance and reliability.

Choice Offerings for Designers

The new products from Cosel and P-Duke give power electronics designers additional tools for their toolbelts. Between Cosel’s more robust and efficient power supplies and P-Duke’s military-grade filters, designers can rest assured either product is top of its class, and their designs will follow suit.
