Power-One Intros PODS 16 Standby Power System

June 22, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, CA), a developer of power supplies and components, introduced its new PODS 16 self-contained, outdoor, standby power system, which provides rectification, system management, power distribution and climate control. The PODS 16 utilizes the power-dense FMP 16.48 rectifier, providing efficiency of 93.5%.

Since only 10 of the rectifiers are required to provide 16 kW of power, the PODS 16 has ample room to also house up to 680 Ah of batteries, an internal controller and customer equipment such as radio links. The use of interior space is also optimized by incorporating a system air conditioner, or heat exchanger, inside the access door.

The PODS 16 operates from a 230 Vac or 415 Vac three-phase input and accommodates up to 10 1.6 kW, 48 V, 32 A rectifiers. The hot-swappable rectifier modules feature input over-voltage disconnect, output over-voltage shutdown and thermal protection. Internal rectifier cooling is provided by speed-controlled and alarmed, redundant magnetic-bearing fans. The PODS 16 is available with a Power-One model PCS or PCC controller, and a battery low-voltage disconnect contactor. Power distribution can be configured for up to four battery breakers, and up to 23 load breakers.

For typical configurations providing 320 A (48 V systems), low-volume pricing is under $4,500 each.
