Power Integrations Intros LNK500 LinkSwitch IC

May 07, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (San Jose, CA), a leader in power conversion semiconductor technology, announced a new lower-cost addition to its LinkSwitch family. The new LNK500, a high-voltage, monolithic, power conversion IC, uses the same primary switching power supply topology as the current LNK501, but takes advantage of the loose output-current characteristic of most low-end linear transformer designs. The LNK500 features a wider output-current tolerance of ±25%, which allows for lower system cost.

Applications for the LNK500 include linear transformer replacement in adapters and battery chargers for a wide range of personal electronics, such as cell phones, cordless phones, PDAs, digital cameras, MP3 players, shavers, home appliances, television standby, and other auxiliary power supplies.

With as few as 14 components, the LNK500, utilizing the company’s EcoSmart® technology, enables a fault-protected, universal input (85Vac to 265Vac), constant voltage or constant voltage/constant current, output switching power supply that meets worldwide energy efficiency standards.

High-volume pricing (>1-million-piece quantities) for the 3W LNK500P in a plastic DIP-8 package is $0.31 each. The device is also available in an eight-pin, surface-mountable package. Production quantities are available in four weeks ARO.
