Polymer Ta Chip Capacitors Offer Ultra-Low ESR

December 09, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today announced a new vPolyTan™ series of surface-mount polymer tantalum molded chip capacitors in five compact case sizes. Optimized for computer, telecom, and industrial applications, Vishay Polytech T55 series devices feature ultra-low ESR down to 30 mΩ at +25 degrees C and 100 kHz.

The low ESR of the capacitors released today is a result of their polymer cathodes, which offer greatly enhanced performance over manganese dioxide devices. In addition, the T55 series offers excellent ripple current rating up to 1.78 A IRMS and provides low equivalent series resistance (ESR) for enhanced charge and discharge characteristics. The capacitors will be used for power management, battery decoupling, and energy storage in computers, tablets, smart phones, and wireless cards.

Offered in the J, P, A, B, and T (low-profile B – 1.2 mm max.) case sizes, T55 series devices feature a wide capacitance range from 3.3 µF to 330 µF over voltage ratings from 2.5 V to 10 V, and a capacitance tolerance of ± 20 %. The devices operate over a temperature range of -55 to +105 degrees C with voltage derating above +85 degrees C.

Featuring lead (Pb)-free terminations, T55 series capacitors are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green. The devices are compatible with high-volume automatic pick-and-place equipment and offer a Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of 3. Samples and production quantities of the new T55 series are available now, with lead times of eight weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery starts at $0.16 per piece.
