Plug Power Inc. (Latham, NY) introduced the GenCore™5T, the company's new 5kW fuel cell system, designed to provide extended run backup power specifically for the telecommunications industry in the demanding outside plant (OSP) market. The GenCore5T is Plug Power's first direct hydrogen product based on a proprietary, modular, scaleable, architected GenCore fuel cell platform.
"Providing backup power to the telecommunications industry demands tough, reliable and predictable power solutions," said Mark Sperry, chief marketing officer, Plug Power. "The GenCore5T is expected to provide the most effective solution to meet the increasing energy needs of the telecommunications market. Priced at $14,995 ($3,000/kW), the zero-emission GenCore5T will appeal to system operators concerned with reducing life-cycle maintenance and total equipment expenses."
Future products from this platform, ranging from 2kW to 12kW, will be marketed to the cable broadband and uninterruptible power supply industries. Shipment of the GenCore5T is expected to begin during the fourth quarter of 2003. Plug Power currently has a 10-unit order backlog for the GenCore5T product.
