Phihong 8-Port Ultra PoE Midspan Reaches Full Power of 60W Per Port

April 26, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Phihong USA has developed an 8-port Power-over-Ethernet midspan that provides Ultra PoE technology with full power of 60W per port. Designated the POE480U-8UP, the low-cost midspan provides total full power of 480W and requires no power management. This Power-over-Ethernet device is well suited for remotely powering applications such as wireless access points, computer workstations, security systems and IP cameras with heaters.

"The Ultra POE480U-8UP enables remote powering of high-power devices outside or on the top of a pole without having to run ac power to the location," said Keith Hopwood, Vice President of Marketing, Phihong USA. "This advanced midspan technology provides full power on every port and is a more cost-effective solution for expanding your network’s capability because it saves thousands of dollars in cost and time when compared to hiring an electrician to install power where it is needed."

The 480W, 8-port Ultra PoE midspan is 17.25 x 8.98 x 1.75". Data networks are avai1able with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, and 1000BASE-T data rates. The POE480U has safety and protection systems designed to meet the IEEE 802.3 standards, including detection, disconnect and overload control.

The outputs are equipped with short-circuit and overload protection, and the output can be shorted permanently without damage. Over-temperature protection allows the midspan to automatically shut down without being damaged. The voltage range of the ac input is 90 to 264Vac, with ac input frequency from 47Hz to 63Hz. There is also an optional dc input available.

Even before the PoE Plus standard was approved in 2009, users were demanding applications that require more than 30W of power per port, such as computer workstations, LCD display panels, and WAP arrays. Other emerging applications, including emergency lighting security system sensors, and even medical monitoring, will greatly benefit from combining data and centralized backup power. Phihong’s Ultra PoE products can deliver from 60 to 80W per port with the same protection and safety precautions as standard PoE.

Typical pricing for Phihong’s POE480U-8UP is $1,244.07 each.
