OnLine Power Supply Debuts 48V Power Supply

New Products Dec 11, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

OnLine Power Supply Inc. (OPS, Englewood, CO) announced the release of its new isolated 48V ac-to-dc power supply. The new unit provides a packaged power efficiency of about 91 percent, with only nine percent of the energy created being lost through heat dissipation. Applications for the new power supply include servers, telecommunications and data storage, as well as ATMs and other high-tech products.

The new 48Vdc power supply incorporates OPS’ patented/patent-pending Distributed Power Magnetics (DPM) technology, resulting in ac-to-dc power supplies that are smaller, lighter, cooler and more efficient. The supply is 0.99 power-factor corrected and provides a packaged power density of 15W per cubic inch. The 1,000W OPS 48Vdc power supply weighs less than 3lbs, compared to current 500W units that weigh between 4lbs and 6lbs.

"A manufacturer can fit three of our power supplies in the same space it currently takes for just one of the competition’s products," said Steve Watt, 48V project manager for OPS. "Using our product, system designers will have two to three times more power in the same footprint. This frees up room for more components, or allows for a smaller overall product."

"This may be the most important event in our company’s history. All of our research, discovery, hard work and persistence is paying off," said OPS CEO Kris Budinger. "We’re excited to start production and get power supplies into our customers’ hands so they can create new generations of smaller, more powerful, more efficient products."

Testing in preparation for UL certification

of the new 48Vdc power supply is underway. Pre-production work at the manufacturing plant will begin in the coming weeks. Prototypes for evaluation of the 1,000W power supply are now being shipped to OEMs.
