ON Semi Releases NCP1400 DC/DC Converter

November 30, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor Corp. (Phoenix, AZ) has released a dc/dc converter it claims is 60 percent smaller in package size as compared to ON Semi's previous offering, the MC33466. The NCP1400 is aimed at battery-powered consumer products such as handheld games, cellular phones and digital cameras. Because it is a micropower pulse width modulator (MPWM) step-up dc/dc, ON Semi stated that it will reduce power consumption in portable devices.

ON Semi says that the new converter is pin-compatible with competitive products. Additionally, the IC is designed to operate at input voltages as low as 0.9V, but can also operate in standard fixed output voltages of 1.9V, 2.7V, 3.0V, 3.3V and 5.0V. Other output voltages between 1.8V and 5.0V are available in increments by special request. The device also includes a feedback resistor, voltage reference, oscillator, PWM control circuit and FET switch.

"Designers of portable electronic products are challenged to create smaller end-products servicing expanded applications that operate at lower voltages and providing longer battery life," commented Larry Hayes, product launch manager at ON Semi. "The NCP1400 is the latest in our line of power management ICs that address those specific design requirements."

The NC1400 is available in sample and production quantities in a TSOP-5 package. It is priced at $0.35 each in quantities of 12,000 units.
