ON Semi Intros NCP144x Series Boost Regulators

November 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor Corp. (Phoenix, AZ) introduced the NCP144x Series of 280kHz and 560kHz boost regulators offering low-cost power-conversion solutions for a wide range of battery-operated applications. Each of the four new current-mode boost regulators feature a 4A/40V integrated power switch that eliminates the need for an external FET.

The flexibility of the design allows the parts to operate in most power supply configurations, including boost, flyback, forward, inverting and SEPIC. Because the devices operate at voltages ranging from 2.7V to 30V, they accommodate numerous applications, including test equipment, hand-held meters, portable printers and computers, and process control.

The high 280kHz or 560kHz operating frequencies allow the use of smaller passive components to save board space. For added design flexibility, the NCP144x family can be synchronized with an external frequency source - up to 500kHz for the NCP1442 and NCP1443 and up to 1MHz for the NCP1444 and NCP1445. A shutdown capability minimizes battery drain by reducing the typical standby current draw to 12µA. A comprehensive set of protection features provides added power distribution stability.

The NCP144x devices in a low-profile, seven-lead, PowerFLEX™ surface-mount packageare priced at $2.14 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities. Also offered in the TO220-7 package, the NCP144x Series is priced at $2.07 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
