Oltronics 350W AC-DC Delivers 15W per Cubic Inch

March 28, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Oltronics Inc. is seeking licensees for its PHG350, a 350W ac-dc power supply design that achieves a density of 15W/in3 while including both universal (90 to 264 Vac) input and active power factor correction (PFC). Oltronics estimates that this over 90% efficient power supply could be produced using a Massachusetts-based contract manufacturer and sold for $180 each in large quantities.

The power supply provides three outputs, a 12V, 29A main output, 5V at 1A for standby power and 12V at 1A for cooling fans. Optional voltages for the main output on these 5" X 3.3" X 1.5" power supplies are available up to 48Vdc, or down to 3.3 Vdc. The power factor for these units is 0.98. The design meets EN60950 safety requirements, VDE and FCC level B conducted EMI limits and IEC1000-3-2 PFC demands.

The PHG350 operates at a fixed frequency of 300kHz to minimize switching losses. The main power section employs zero-current and zero-voltage switching and the output uses synchronous rectification. The PHG350 provides up to 200W of power at 50 degrees C with an input voltage of 90Vac with only convection cooling. Airflow of 10CFM is required to achieve the full rated output of 350W.

Oltronics also offers the CPH350, a simplified design, with fewer features, but the same size and power level, that is still provided with universal input and active PFC. It is estimated that the CPH350 that could be sold for $60 each ($0.17/W), in large quantities.
