Murata 4:1 Input DC-DC Converters Deliver 30W From 1 x 2" Package

February 22, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

Murata Power Solutions released its UEI30 isolated wide-range dc-dc converters which deliver a full 30W output power from a board area of just 1.8 square inches. Designed for PCB mounting, the new modules are said to deliver efficient dc regulated power and are well suited for use in both battery and mains powered equipment in applications requiring wide input voltage, such as small instruments, computer-based systems, datacoms equipment, remote sensor systems and vehicle electronics.

The UEI30 series comprises eight input/output combinations giving tightly regulated fixed output voltages of 3.3, 5, 12 and 15Vdc and a choice of 4:1 inputs of 9 to 36Vdc or 18 to 75Vdc. A synchronous rectifier forward topology helps the UEI30 series achieve high efficiency levels of up to 91% and minimal heat build-up allowing operation without cooling fans. The open frame version has overall dimensions of 23.4mm (0.92in.) x 48.8mm (1.92in.) x 8.9mm (0.35in.) and complies with industry standard package and pinout. A plastic package version is also available as an option.

Design features include full magnetic and optical isolation up to 2250Vdc (basic insulation) and all modules have an operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C (with derating). Excellent ripple and noise specifications and fast transient response assure compatibility to circuits using CPUs, ASICs, programmable logic and FPGAs. The converter fully regulates even under no load condition, and for systems requiring controlled start-up and shutdown a remote on/off feature with either positive or negative logic is provided. The output voltage may be adjusted to within +/-10% of its nominal value.

The UEI30 series incorporates a number of self-protection features to avoid both converter and external circuit problems, including input under-voltage lockout input transient protection and over-temperature shutdown. Output current limit uses ’hiccup’ auto-restart technique and the converter is able to withstand continuous short-circuit. Additional features include output over-voltage and reverse conduction elimination.

The UEI series is fully RoHS compliant and meets the safety requirements of all key regulatory standards including, UL60950-1, CSA-C22.2 No.234 and EN60950-1 approvals.
