New Products Apr 15, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Microsemi Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced that it has added two new drivers to its portfolio of controllers for light-emitting diodes used in a wide range of consumer and handheld displays. The LX1990 dual-programmable current sink provides even lighting of multiple LEDs in the low-cost indicator lights found in phone sets, cameras, automotive displays and consumer electronic-control panels.

The LX1993 is a compact, high-efficiency, step-up, boost controller for driving white, high brightness blue, green or ultraviolet LEDs in either backlit or frontlit systems. Typical applications are for displays in pagers, mobile phones, PDAs and digital cameras.

The two controllers feature a pseudo-hysteresis, pulse-frequency modulation topology optimized to extend battery operation in portable applications. The input-voltage range is from 1.6V to 6.0V, allowing for a wide selection of system battery voltages. Start-up operation is guaranteed at 1.6V input.

The LX1990, packaged in a six-pin, surface-mount, MLP package, is priced at $0.33 in 100,000-unit quantities. The LX1993 uses an eight-pin, MSOP, surface-mount package and is priced at $0.52 in 100,000-piece quantities. Both are available for immediate sampling and volume delivery.
