MCG Introduces 3VDC High Speed Crowbar Protector

New Products Mar 13, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

MCG Surge Protection Inc. introduced its new crowbar series – the CB08-20A/3Vdc) – designed to protect low voltage operating systems from over voltages. Typically used with dc powered electronics, the crowbar device protects equipment from a sudden increase in power supply voltage, due to a loss of regulation or accidental system conditions.

When the crowbar senses an overvoltage, in microseconds it shorts out the power supply’s output, thus protecting the critical load. It remains in the shorted mode until power is removed from it. If the power is reapplied and is below the crowbar’s trip voltage, the unit reappears as an open circuit ready for the next over voltage event.

The CB08-20A/3Vdc may be used on systems with up to 20A of power supply current. Higher voltages and currents are available upon request.

Its small footprint (less than 1.5 in² (903 mm²)) is said to facilitate easy mounting. The MCG CB08 crowbar device is a unipolar device. However, bipolar protection may be achieved by utilizing two units connected in inverse parallel.
