Maxim Integrated Products Intros MAX8620Y microPMIC

April 20, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) introduced its new MAX8620Y, a micropower management integrated circuit (microPMIC), which integrates a 500 mA step-down dc-dc converter, two 300 mA low-dropout linear regulators and a 30 ms reset into a small 9 mm² TDFN package with a maximum height of 0.8 mm. The MAX8620Y is suitable for cell phones, smart phones and MP3 players.

The TDFN package is said to save 78% of the space required by alternative designs. Providing up to 92% efficiency, the 4 MHz synchronous step-down dc-dc converter uses a low-profile 1 µH inductor and tiny ceramic capacitors. Its 100 ns transient response fits demanding processor applications such as graphics processing, video streaming and gaming.

The two LDOs provide low-noise 45 µVrms output, and the output voltages are pin-programmable to save size and maintain flexibility. The reset output warns the system of impending power loss, thereby allowing safe shutdown.

The MAX8620Y is available in a 3 mm x 3 mm, 14-pin TDFN package, screened for the extended-industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. Prices start at $2.20 for quantities of 2,500-plus units.
