Low-Cost 160W Planar Transformers 9.6mm High

New Products Jan 29, 2017 by Jeff Shepard

Pulse Electronics Corporation announced the release of its most cost-effective planar transformer platform ever. The PH08xxCNL series offer up to 160W of power within a 25 x 22 x 9.6 mm package size and is the next step in the company's cost down initiative of the previously announced PH08xxNL series.

“Our first cost down step replaced the traditional multilayer PCB of the PA08xxNL series with a helical flat coil, reducing the direct current resistance (DCR) by 50%, leading to both a 20% increase in power handling capability and 20% reduction in price,” explained Gerard Healy, Product Manager, Pulse Electronics Power Business Unit. “The PH08xxCNL series offers a further 20% price reduction by replacing the inserted pins with a pinned header,” Healy concluded.

The PH08xxCNL series is designed to operate over the range of 200- to 700-kHz and features 1500Vdc primary-to-secondary isolation. It has a different pad layout to the earlier series so it is the recommend and most cost-effective solution for new designs.

This series is available in tape and reel packaging with starting prices of $2.99. Lead time is approximately eight weeks, and samples are available upon request.
