Linear Technology Debuts LTC1998 Detector

November 19, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (Milpitas, CA) introduced the LTC1998, a highly accurate, adjustable low-voltage detector designed to provide low-battery-voltage warning in single-cell, lithium-ion battery applications.

Using a proprietary internal architecture, it maintains one-percent accuracy over temperature even when using low-cost one-percent resistors to set the threshold voltage, allowing a maximum safe runtime without over-discharge. Unlike fixed-voltage monitors, the threshold voltage and hysteresis are adjusted with external resistors. This allows the user to set the trip voltage, providing flexibility of use with a variety of lithium-ion chemistries.

The LTC1998, in a six-pin SOT-23, is quoted at $0.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities. It is specified for temperatures ranging from -40 to +85 degrees C or 0 to 70 degrees C.
