IXYS Releases New Voltage Boost Converter

August 23, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

IXYS Corp. announced that its Micronix division has released the MX846, a 50mA regulated output efficient voltage doubler designed for localized voltage step-up applications. The MX846 provides a high efficiency regulated output voltage with a minimum number of external components. Output regulation is accurate to +/- 5% and is adjustable from 3 to 5V via external resistors. Utilizing a charge pump topology eliminates the need for an inductor, making the MX846 an optimum choice for low noise applications.

The MX846 uses a 1MHz switching frequency, enabling the use of smaller filter capacitors to meet the requirements of size sensitive applications. With an operating range of 3 to 5V and a typical shutdown current of 1microA, the MX846 is suitable for portable battery devices. The MX846 has an operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C, and is available in a standard 8-lead, RoHS compliant, SOIC package in tubes or on tape and reel.

"We designed the MX846 to serve those applications where only low voltage supplies are available, but the need for higher voltages is required. The MX846 is a perfect choice for low voltage microprocessor or lithium battery applications as it provides a regulated 3 to 5V output suitable for higher complexity analog or mixed signal functions," stated Bob DeCaro, Vice President and General Manager of Clare Micronix.

"With the strategic focus on power management ICs that complement our line up of power semiconductors, our IC designers at Micronix have shown their creativity in providing such solutions in silicon. It has been demonstrated also in the recent introduction of the MX868 our 12 bit magnetic flux sensing IC, for digital power control applications," commented Dr. Nathan Zommer, CEO of IXYS.
