Intersil Upgrades ISL6558 PWM Controller

March 20, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced the upgraded Endura™ ISL6558 precision, multi-phase, pulse-width modulated controller IC, which features industrial temperature range and near chip-scale, quad flat no-lead (QFN) package options. The ISL6558 is a precision controller suitable for powering microprocessors, chip sets, graphics, memory, computer peripherals, and other low output-voltage, dc/dc converter applications.

The upgrading of this product now makes it available in both commercial and industrial temperature ranges and in both the 16-lead SOIC and 20-pad QFN packages. The ISL6558 QFN packaging yields 55 percent smaller area. The extended temperature range and low thermal impedance QFN package make the ISL6558 a suitable choice for industrial environments. The ISL6558 regulates output voltage, balances load currents and provides protective functions for two to four synchronous rectified buck converter channels. Intersil’s multi-phase buck converter architecture uses interleaved timing to multiply channel ripple frequency, improve thermal performance, and reduce input and output ripple currents.

All versions of the ISL6558 are available now. Pricing is for 1,000-unit quantities. The ISL6558CB in an SOIC package is priced at $1.50, the ISL6558CR in a QFN package is $1.50, the ISL6558IB in an SOIC package is $1.75 and the ISL6558IR in the QFN package is $1.75. Evaluation platforms are available for both the SOIC and QFN packaged products.
