Intersil Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced its new ISL4260E and ISL83386E LINEARLINK RS-232 interface ICs for use in hand-held, battery-powered and space-constrained devices. The ISL4260E is available in a 5mm x 5mm x 0.9mm QFN package, while the ISL83386E is in a 20-lead TSSOP. Both feature three transmitters and two receivers. The devices operate over a 3V to 5.5V supply range and are fully compatible with 3V, mixed 3V and 5V, and 5V-only systems. Each IC draws 300µA during operation and 150nA during power-down.

The ISL83386E is a pin-for-pin match with the MAX3386E and SP3203E, and is intended for use in PDAs and other hand-held devices requiring an RS-232 link to a PC. The ISL4260 transceiver completes the serial communications interface on the PC end of the link. The devices also feature a VL supply pin that improves interoperation in mixed-voltage logic systems, by adjusting the input thresholds and output logic levels to match the external supply. The RS-232 transmitters/receivers meet EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 specifications, even at 3V supply. ESD protection is provided (±15kV air gap and HBM) on all transmitter outputs and receiver inputs.
