Infineon Technologies Announces the CoolMOS C2 Power MOSFET

June 18, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Infineon Technologies Corp. (Munich, Germany) announced its second-generation CoolMOS C2 power MOSFET family. The CoolMOS first generation offered a major reduction in conduction losses, and the second generation, CoolMOS C2, retains the major On-resistance reduction and adds a major reduction in switching losses. The CoolMOS technology is the next step in Infineon's strategy to pursue silicon instead of heatsinks.

CoolMOS is a metal-oxide semiconductor technology that allows a reduction of RDS values by a factor of between 5 and 10 for the same chip area when compared to existing processes. The incorporation of vertical p-strips into the drift zone reduces the reverse voltage in both vertical and horizontal directions, unlike the previous CoolMOS generation that only addressed the horizontal direction.

Prices range from $2.83 to $3.25 in 1,000-unit amounts.
