Freescale Intros MC34652/MC34653 Power Management ICs

October 11, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (Austin, TX) introduced two new advanced, highly integrated, power management ICs, the MC34652 and MC34653, which facilitate an easy hot-swapping solution in -48 V backplanes for telecommunications and networking equipment. Both the MC34652 and MC34653 integrate a power MOSFET to control the load.

The ICs feature an input-voltage range of -15 V to -80 V (MC34652) and -39 V to -74 V (MC34653), a maximum output current of 2 A (MC34652) and 1 A (MC34653), and over-current limiting with auto retry (default or programmable). The charging current limit is independent of the load capacitance. Also included is a startup and retry delay timer (programmable option on the MC34652), over-voltage and under-voltage detection (programmable option on the MC34652), and active high and low power-good output signals. The new chips also have thermal shutdown protection.

Production quantities of both the MC34652 and MC34653 are available now. The MC34652, in a 16-lead SOIC, is priced at $2.15 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The MC34653, in an eight-lead SOIC, is priced at $1.82 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
