Fairchild Introduces Wide-Voltage-Range Integrated Boost Converter in Ultra-Thin MLP

April 18, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor introduced the new FAN5336 high-frequency integrated boost converter, which the company claims allows designers to achieve a remarkable 87% system efficiency, low EMI and board space savings in a wide range of small LCD bias supply and white LED backlight designs.

This 1.5MHz switching boost converter features a wide output-voltage range (9-33V) and integrates a switching NFET into an ultra-thin-profile, molded leadless package (UMLP) that measures only 3 x 3 x 0.6mm. Smaller than SOT-packaged devices typically used in these applications, the FAN5336 offers more functionality including higher peak current (1.5A) than similar 1.0A devices, as well as excellent line and load regulation (0.2%) and high switching frequency (1.5MHz). As a result, the FAN5336 helps to minimize noise, heat generation and emissions in cell and smart phones, MP3 players, medical devices and many other portable applications. Additionally, the converter’s high frequency allows the use of smaller components, helping designers maximize board space while easing design complexity.

"Fairchild’s FAN5336 is an excellent choice as an all-purpose boost converter for a variety of display applications," said Bruno Kranzen, Ultra-Portable Product Line Director for Fairchild. "Designers will find this device especially beneficial in today’s small LCD bias supplies and white LED backlight supply applications that require an input range of 2.7 to 5.5V. In these designs, FAN5336 delivers 87% efficiency by providing at least 100mA load current into an output rail set between 9 to 21V, and 50mA current into an output as high as 33V. Fairchild developed the FAN5336 to offer designers another option in our growing portfolio of integrated boost converter solutions that cover a broad range of applications. Other products include the FAN5331 and FAN5332 with 20 and 30V output voltages, respectively."

In addition to efficiency advantages, the FAN5336 offers features for system reliability including cycle-by-cycle current limit, 1.5A peak current support and soft-start capability. The FAN5336 is available in 6-terminal UMLP and MLP packages. These lead (Pb)-free packages meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and are compliant with European Union regulations now in effect.

The units are priced (each, 1000 piece) at US$ 0.91 (3 x 3 x 0.6mm, UMLP), and US$ 0.86 (3 x 3 x 0.8mm, MLP). They are available now with a delivery time of 6 to 8 weeks.
