Fairchild Debuts FPS Integrated Power Switch Family

February 29, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor International (South Portland, ME) introduced three new PowerSaver™ products in its Fairchild Power Switch (FPS™) family of products, the FSDM0565R, FSDM07652R and the FSDM0365RN, featuring low standby power and low EMI for improved performance in video system applications.

In compliance with the International Energy Agency’s 1-Watt Initiative, the PowerSaver FPS components achieve low standby power by using an integrated, high-voltage, startup regulator in conjunction with Fairchild’s advanced burst-mode standby operation. The products utilize a precision, fixed-frequency oscillator, and frequency modulation for the FSDM0365RN, to limit EMI. The FPS products combine an avalanche-rated SenseFET (650 V minimum breakdown rating) for current sensing with a current-mode, pulse-width modulated IC. The integrated FPS devices include pulse-by-pulse current limiting, internal soft-start to reduce voltage overshoot at plug in, overload protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, under-voltage lockout with hysteresis and internal thermal shutdown.

The FSDM0365RN is available in an eight-pin DIP package, and the FSDM0565R and FSDM07652R are available in an isolated, six-leaded TO-220 package. The packages are lead-free and meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B, and are compliant with the European Union requirements, which will take effect in 2005. Pricing for the FSDM0565R is $1.32, the FSDM07652R is $1.58 and the FSDM0365RN is $1.11, all for 1,000-piece quantities. Available now, delivery is eight weeks for quantities greater than 100,000.
