Ericsson Debuts PKD 4000 Series Power Modules

New Products Oct 22, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Ericsson Microelectronics (Kista, Sweden) announced the launch of its PKD 4000 Series of 27W dc/dc, low-profile, surface-mountable power modules, which meet the UK's forthcoming requirements for lead-free soldering.

The 48V input, 3.3V/8A output PKD 4210 SI is the first in this power range to be produced in a surface-mount package, and features a patented mechanical design that allows re-flow soldering at higher temperatures. The surface-mount package provides the end user with reductions in manufacturing costs through the use of automated pick and place equipment.

High efficiency, typically over 89 percent, is achieved using a patented electrical design based on synchronous rectification. This minimizes heat dissipation, lowers operating temperatures, improves system reliability and cuts operating costs.

The modules are only 0.3in (7.5mm) high, allowing close spacing of printed circuit cards in equipment. It has a small footprint of 1.81in x 1.97in (46mm x 50mm) to save board space and weighs less than 20g.

The PKD 4000 Series features a mean time between failures (MTBF) of greater than 200 years at 75 degrees C case temperature. Input/output isolation is 1,500Vdc.

The 500-piece price for the PKD 4210 SI is $56.60. Samples are available from stock.
