Emerson Network Power Launches DS1200DC-3 Digitally Programmable 1200W DC-input Bulk Front-End Power Supply
Emerson Network Power launched the DS1200DC-3, a high-efficiency dc-input 1200W bulk front-end power supply for systems that use distributed power architectures. The new DS1200DC-3 power supply is digitally programmable via an I2C interface and is PMBus compliant. It provides a very flexible and cost-effective means of accommodating the high bulk power demands of today’s networking equipment.
Developed specifically for systems co-located with telecom and central office applications operating from 48V battery plants, the new DS1200DC-3 power supply has a wide input voltage range of -40 to -72Vdc. In addition to its main +12 Vdc output, which can deliver up to 100A continuously, the power supply also generates an auxiliary ’always on’ output for powering standby circuitry.
Housed in a compact plug-in rack-mounting module, the Emerson Network Power DS1200DC-3 has a 1U x 2U form factor – it measures just 1.6 inch (4 cm) high by 3.2 inch (8.1 cm) wide. Use of the latest power conversion topology means that it has a very high efficiency – typically in excess of 85% at half load - and a power density of 21.7 W/in3 (1.3 w/cm3). The power supply has an operating temperature range of minus 10 to 55°C and features a built-in cooling fan with automatic speed control; forward and reversed airflow versions are available to simplify integration with the rack’s cooling layout.
The DS1200DC-3 power supply feature active current sharing, which operates from 10 to 100% of full load, allowing multiple supplies to be paralleled for very high current applications. The supplies are hot pluggable, have no minimum load requirement, and incorporate low-loss internal ORing Field Effect Transistors (FETs) on the main 12V output, for fault-tolerant and N+1 redundancy applications. The DS1200DC-3 also supports active current sharing with its ac-input DS1200 series counterpart, enabling users to implement mixed ac/dc input power schemes very easily.
The Emerson Network Power DS1200DC-3 offers users a choice of a 3.3Vdc or 5Vdc auxiliary output, rated at 6A and 4A respectively. The main +12Vdc output and the auxiliary output are both regulated to within plus or minus 5% for all permissible input, load and temperature conditions, with output ripple on the 12V output kept to a maximum of 120 mV p-p. The 12V output is adjustable by plus or minus 5% via the I2C interface bus and can be set to a very high accuracy of plus or minus 0.2%.
The DS1200DC-3 power supply fully complies with the rigorous standards for conducted and radiated EMI - and input transient protection – of GR-1089-CORE Issue 4. It is also comprehensively protected against fault conditions, including overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature. Both dc outputs feature auto-recovery from an overcurrent condition; the main 12V output will latch off if the condition persists for more than a second.
Front panel bi-color LEDs provide visual indication of the power supply’s operational status for local diagnostic purposes, and this data can also be retrieved via the I2C interface bus by the system under power for preemptive action. The DS1200DC-3 also contains an EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory) that is pre-programmed with data about the unit – including its type, serial number and date of manufacture – to facilitate replacement in the field.
The Emerson Network Power DS1200DC-3 power supply is designed for NEBS compliant systems and carries a comprehensive set of international safety approvals, including UL/cUL 60950, NEMKO+ CB 60950, EN60950, CE Mark and China CCC. The power supply is also fully compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) per EU directive 2002/95/EC.
Emerson Network Power’s DS1200DC-3 power supply has a demonstrated mean time between failure (MTBF) of 500,000 hours, running at full load and 40°C.
