CHiL Semiconductor Releases New Family of MOSFET Drivers

January 12, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

CHiL Semiconductor Corp., announced that it has introduced a new family of MOSFET drivers, focusing on high efficiency voltage regulator (VR) solutions. Driver models are available with variable gate drive and over-temperature protection, improving servers’ reliability and efficiency.

The MOSFET driver family is designed to operate over a 5 to 12V range and is engineered to optimize efficiency and offer consistent gate current over the entire drive voltage range. Today’s servers no longer have 12V available when operating or sleep state, so CHiL drivers have been engineered to operate from 5V standby in servers, storage systems, and other electronic equipment.

"With the introduction of these new MOSFET drivers, CHiL is continuing its focus on products that optimize system efficiency and reliability," said Larry Spaziani, CHiL’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "Our enthusiasm for developing energy efficient products is reflected in this new family of drivers."

The full-featured CHL8515 operates from 5V Vcc and can operate from a drive voltage ranging from 4 to 13V. It is fully compatible with CHiL’s variable gate drive technology, which is used to optimize efficiency by tuning gate voltage to the optimum point for a given MOSFET. The CHL8515 also enhances system reliability with an over-temperature protection (OTP) feature. The feature provides OTP on each phase of a multiphase VR solution. The over-temperature set point can be set from 60 to 150°C using a single resistor. The variable gate drive can be optimized for both high and low side voltages with separate drive pins.

The CHL8550 offers a lower cost option, still operating with variable gate drive. Finally, the CHL8505 operates from a fixed 5V drive voltage and offers a cost-competitive solution while still delivering exceptional efficiency.

All three models are offered in 10-pin DFN 3 x 3mm² packages and are available as samples. Thousand-piece pricing is $0.29 for the full-featured model CHL8515; $0.29 for CHL8550; and $0.25 cents for model CHL8505. The devices are designed to be used in ambient operating temperatures from -40 to 85°C.
