Bel Fuse has announced its SDM100G Series, a new family of 100 W medical desktop power supplies engineered to meet the stringent safety and power requirements of the healthcare industry. As the company's first USB Type-C medical power supply line, the new adapters give designers a compact, globally compatible platform for powering devices across a variety of voltage requirements.

By adopting a universally recognized charging standard like USB-C, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can help simplify device accessories and reduce overall electronic waste. Company representatives noted that merging USB-C Power Delivery with GaN technology offers medical device designers a highly adaptable, small form-factor option that does not compromise on safety or operational reliability.

Output Specifications and USB-C Power Delivery

A primary engineering benefit of the SDM100G Series is its support for multiple USB-C PD output levels. The adapters are capable of delivering 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, and 15 V (at up to 3 A), as well as a maximum of 20 V at up to 5 A to achieve the full 100 W of DC output power.

This output versatility enables a single power supply platform to support a diverse array of equipment. As a result, engineers can standardize their power architectures, minimizing the number of unique power components required across their product lines. The adapters also deliver high operating performance, meeting Level VI efficiency standards.

Product Variations and Physical Design

To address different regional electrical standards and equipment grounding requirements, the series is currently available in two distinct AC inlet configurations, the SDM100G-U and the SDM100G-D:

  • SDM100G-U: Equipped with a Class I, IEC320/C14 AC inlet.
  • SDM100G-D: Equipped with a Class II, C8 AC inlet.

Both variants share a low-profile mechanical footprint, measuring 136.0 mm (L) x 68.0 mm (W) x 25.4 mm (H), and weigh approximately 500 grams. Built for operational stability, the power supplies feature a 1,200 mm USB-C cord, support a standard AC input voltage range of 90 to 264 Vac, and are rated to operate continuously in ambient temperatures ranging from -20°C to 40°C. More information can be found in the data sheets for the SDM100G-U and the SDM100G-D.

Protection Features and Medical Certifications

For mission-critical healthcare environments, hardware-level protection against electrical faults is non-negotiable. The SDM100G power supplies are equipped with comprehensive internal safeguards against overvoltage (latch-off output shutdown) as well as continuous auto-recovery for both overcurrent (110% to 160%) and short-circuit events.

To streamline design cycles for medical applications, the series carries a 2x Means of Patient Protection (MOPP) safety classification to protect against electric shock, providing a 4,000 Vac isolation voltage from input to output. The hardware is certified to the latest IEC/UL 60601-1 guidelines and meets global regulatory and EMC requirements, including UL, cUL, TUV, UKCA, CE, and FCC. It also complies with EN 55011 and FCC Part 15 Class B limits for radiated and conducted emissions.

Built for Resilient Medical and IoT Systems

Providing adaptable power solutions to medical system architects remains a primary focus for Bel Fuse. The SDM100G Series was developed specifically for portable medical devices, mobile medical workstations, wearable health tech, and remote patient-monitoring equipment.

Beyond the medical field, the family’s combination of compact size, GaN-driven efficiency, and USB-C power delivery makes it equally well-suited for demanding industrial, consumer, and IoT applications. The product line encompasses 12 unique SKUs and has a standard lead time of 10 weeks, allowing engineers to construct highly resilient systems while standardizing around modern USB-C power architecture.
