April 25, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

According to news reports, the Beijing Solar Photoelectric Center (BSPC) has begun commercial production of a solar-powered battery for mobile phone applications. The battery is designed to be recharged anytime using not only visible light, but also invisible light, such as ultraviolet and infrared rays. The battery can also be recharged using ac or dc power. The optoelectric inversion rate is claimed to reach up to 21.6 percent, higher than that of American and Japanese technology.Beijing Shenle Photoelectric Technology Research Institute chief Yang Yongqing stated that BSPC is the first in the world to use the optoelectric inversion technology in manufacturing mobile phone batteries. Yang expects the technology to eventually be applied in automotive and solar electricity generating equipment as well.
