Artesyn Launches Eighth-Brick DC Converters

April 05, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in power conversion solutions and real-time subsystems for the communications industry, launched five low-cost, 25 A/20 A, isolated, eighth-brick, dc-dc converters that are set to accelerate design migration from standard quarter-brick form factors. Known as "value" models, the new converters are designed for applications where cost sensitivity has precluded use of the latest-generation small form factor power converter technology.

The converters offer a choice of 1.2 V, 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V and 3.3 V outputs, and use the same ultra-high-efficiency topology as other eighth-brick converters in Artesyn’s Typhoon™ product family. The Typhoon eighth-bricks, including the new cost-optimized value models, use a patented full-wave, coupled inductor topology. The output voltage of each of the five value models typically only deviates by 70 mV during a 25-percent step change in load current at rates up to 1 A/µs, and completely recovers within 20 µs.

All five value models feature a wide input-voltage range of 36 Vdc to 75 Vdc, making them suitable for use with telecom-standard 48 V supplies, and are fully protected against input-voltage transients of up to 100 V for 100 ms. The outputs can be adjusted from 80 percent to 110 percent of nominal, using a single voltage trim resistor. In common with all Typhoon eighth-brick converters, the value models have an industry-standard 0.9 in x 2.3 in (22.9 mm x 58.4 mm) footprint. The value models are specified for operation over the ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C, and can supply full usable power without a heatsink; no de-rating is required down to 100 LFM of airflow.

Sample quantities of Artesyn’s eighth-brick converters are available for immediate delivery. Standard lead-time for quantity orders is stock to 12 weeks. Pricing is $49.50 in OEM quantities of 1,000.
