Artesyn Debuts SIL20C and SIL40C POL Converters

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in advanced power conversion equipment for the communications industry, has extended its point-of-load (POL) converter range with its new SIL20C and SIL40C converters. The C-Class, non-isolated, dc/dc converters are optimized for cost-critical applications through open-frame, single-board construction. The new components are suitable for the computers and peripherals market, and can be used in application sectors such as computing and telecommunications.

The new 20A SIL20C and 40A SIL40C feature wide adjustable outputs of 0.9V to 5V, which are set to the required value by a single external resistor. The components additionally extend the available output power from 150W to 200W. The as SIL20C and SIL40C converters are intended for through-hole board mounting, and are offered in a choice of vertical or horizontal package orientations to simplify design-in. Vertical models feature small-footprint, single-in-line connections. All SIL20C and SIL40C Series converters offer a remote on/off facility, trim, and a power-good output signal. The converters have no minimum load requirement, and incorporate over-temperature protection as standard. They feature input under-voltage lockout, and are fully protected against over-current and short-circuit conditions. In addition, SIL40C supports current sharing between parallel modules.

The SIL20C is the smaller of the new POL converters, and can handle output currents up to 20A. The horizontal version measures just 1.2in x 1.1in, and has an above-board height of 0.47in; the vertical version has a footprint of only 1.2in x 0.40in, with an above-board height of 1.1in. The 5Vdc input models have typical conversion efficiencies of 87%, and provide an output that is trimmable from 0.9V to 3.3V. The 12Vdc input models offer 91% efficiency and a wide output trim range of 0.9V to 5.0V. The SIL40C converters can handle output currents as high as 40A, using a dual-phase switching topology to minimize input and output ripple. The horizontal version measures 2.4in x 1.25in, and has an above-board height of 0.47in; the vertical version has a footprint of only 2.4in x 0.5in, with an above-board height of 1.25in. The converters offer typical full load efficiencies of 91%. The wide output ranges mean that both the SIL20C and SIL40C support the common low-voltage silicon levels of 3.3V, 2.5V and 1.8V, as well as the increasingly popular 1.5V and 1.2V - and even termination voltages of 1.25V or lower.

The SIL20C and SIL40C Series offer open-frame construction, an operational temperature range of 0°C to +50°C ambient (up to +80°C with derating), and a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950. Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities is $8 for the SIL20C and $12.80 for the SIL40C. Sample quantities are available for immediate shipment, and lead times for production volumes are from six to eight weeks.
