Artesyn Adds 24 V Converters to Typhoon Family

September 20, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in power conversion solutions for the communications industry, has added 24 V input eighth-brick and quarter-brick converters to its Typhoon™ family of board-mounted dc-dc converters. The new series initially comprises two 20 A eighth bricks and two 30 A quarter bricks, offering single isolated outputs of 1.8 V and 3.3 V.

The 24 V Typhoon converters are primarily intended for 27 V wireless base stations, telecom applications and general 24 V industrial electronics systems. They are also suitable for use in legacy 24 V microwave and optical fiber equipment. The converters’ nominal 24 V input accommodates any voltage in the range 18 V to 36 V, making them suitable for distributed power architecture systems with either 24 Vdc or 28 Vdc power distribution buses. Both the eighth-brick and quarter-brick 1.8 V output models provide high full load efficiencies of 91%, and the 3.3 V models offer 90%. The 24 V converters are designed for operation over an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C without a heatsink, and are suitable for both convection-cooled and forced-air environments.

The eighth bricks have an industry-standard 2.3 in x 0.9 in footprint and use the same pin out as quarter bricks. The 24 V input quarter bricks have an industry-standard 2.3 in x 1.45 in footprint. The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including UL/cUL60950 and EN60950-1 VDE. The 24 V input Typhoon brick converters are now available. In quantities of 1,000, prices range from $54.45 for the 20 A eighth bricks, and $78.95 for the 30 A quarter bricks. Standard lead time is stock to 8 to 10 weeks ARO.
