Apex Microtechnology Intros MSA240/MSA260 Amplifiers

November 08, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Apex Microtechnology Corp. (Tucson, AZ) introduced its MSA240 and MSA260, which are complete PWM solutions that include an oscillator, comparator, error amplifier, current limit comparators and a full bridge output. The error amplifier also can be used as a differential amplifier on the input to allow interface with most motor control chip sets. The MSA240 and MSA260 also are designed as full bridge, 4-quadrant PWM amplifiers to allow the amplifier to transition smoothly through 0 V for applications requiring deceleration and position control.

Rated at 20 A output and a motor voltage supply of up to 100 V, the MSA240 can deliver up to 2,000 W of continuous power to the load. The MSA260 is a 20 A device capable of operating on supplies up to 450 V, delivering up to 9,000 W to the load. Additional features for both the MSA240 and MSA260 include a variable, user-defined switching frequency up to 50 kHz. The MSA260 also includes IGBTs on the outputs to provide great efficiency at the device's higher operating voltages.

The MSA240 and MSA260 both offer product design and packaging utilizing Apex's "open-frame" SMT construction technology, which generates cost efficiencies by eliminating the costly, time-consuming manufacturing steps typically found in the process-intensive assembly of hybrid components. The MSA240 is priced $67 in 100-piece quantities, and the MSA260 is priced at $99.70. An evaluation kit is also available in the EK56.
