APCC Debuts Back-UPS HS 500 Power Management UPS

September 05, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

American Power Conversion Corp. (APCC, West Kingston, RI) debuted its new wall-mountable or rack-mountable Back-UPS® HS 500 VA, a power management uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for home and home office environments. The Back-UPS HS 500 provides availability to critical home networking equipment by protecting data lines, and also offers battery backup to home networking devices such as routers and Voice-over-Internet Protocol telephones. The patent-pending Back-UPS HS 500 has user-controlled plug outlets and a management interface allowing the user to manage the unit remotely over a network or via the Internet.

The Back-UPS HS 500 has four battery backup outlets offering up to 51 minutes run time for critical applications. The device notifies the user through visual alarm LED indicators of the power supply's condition and status. This includes notification of communication status and if the battery is in use, needs replacing, is low, missing, or not properly connected. The Back-UPS HS 500 also offers surge protection for cable modems, cable television converters, or digital satellite system receivers. It protects equipment connected via 10/100 Base-T Ethernet lines as well as fax, phone, digital subscriber lines, and modem lines.

The Back-UPS HS 500 is designed to be wall-mounted next to the building's panel box or used with a shelf mount (2U). It allows a user to remotely manage the unit by turning the three web-controlled outlets on and off when not in use, which prevents overloads and helps to maximize battery performance and reliability. It also allows the user to recycle power to locked equipment, which minimizes downtime and travel time to the equipment. Up to five Back-UPS HS 500 units can be controlled through the included management utility.

The Back-UPS HS 500 has an equipment protection policy of $100,000, and is currently available in North America. It is priced at $119.99.
